Japanese: 海老縛り

The “shrimp” or “prawn” tie. One of the oldest traditional kinbaku</a> ties. It was used as a torture technique (ebizeme) for 100’s of years and is referenced in many manuals and art works.

The ebi tie was a form of torture that was mandated by the Tokugawa shogunate in 1742 as one of 7 official punishments for criminals and enemies of the state.

The bent-over position creates slow strain on the body while the whole configuration makes it really impossible for your partner to escape. About the only movement available is to roll about, which in the end only emphasizes the general helplessness and may even enhance the sense of vulnerability and exposure.

The ebi shibari has changed a little over time. In hojo jutsu, you wouldn’t have used the same wide bands of rope (less chance of nerver compression), but rather just single strands, because the intent was not comfort but the opposite.

Therefore, be advised, in the short term the ebi shibari is a fun position for SM play but can be quite an ordeal over time. Please play carefully.
