Japanese rope terminology

Semenawa (責め縄)

Semenawa (責め縄) is a term used in Japanese rope bondage for rope that introduces pressure, difficulty, challenge or suffering into the experience of being tied. It is closely associated with kinbaku, but kinbaku does not depend on semenawa.

Term and meaning

Japanese: 責め縄
Reading: semenawa
Seme (責め): pressure, torment or challenge in this context
Nawa (縄): rope

The term is sometimes translated loosely as torture rope or torture bondage. Those translations can sound more extreme in English than the way the concept is often used in practice.

Semenawa kinbaku by RopeMarks

Semenawa in kinbaku

In kinbaku, semenawa can describe tying that deliberately creates physical or psychological difficulty. This may involve pressure, restrictive positions, imbalance, endurance, vulnerability or controlled discomfort.

The emphasis is not simply on making a tie painful. The experience can come from the way the rope, position and interaction create challenge for the person being tied.

Semenawa and kinbaku are closely related concepts, but they are not synonymous. Kinbaku can exist without semenawa, and not every kinbaku session is intended to create suffering or difficulty.
