Some performances are about beauty. Others are about suffering. And sometimes, apparently, someone needs to end up on a barbecue.

Masters of Spit Roast is a darkly humorous, post-apocalyptic performance created for Wasteland Summerfest, combining kinbaku, theatrical cruelty and a rather unconventional approach to preparing dinner.

The story began with our meat, Duchesse, being carried through the festival grounds like a captured animal, suspended from a bamboo beam between her captors. A procession through the wasteland, with the audience following along.

Once at the stage, the preparations began. Duchesse… apologies, the meat, was suspended upside down, ready to be tenderized. The three masters, Ulfgripir, The Duke and RopeMarks, each contributed to the preparations in their own way. Rope, physical interaction and a good deal of dark humor turned the scene into something between a ritual and a very questionable cooking demonstration.

And then came the main course. Duchesse… apologies, the tenderized meat, was placed on a rotating spit above the barbecue, where the masters proceeded to turn her over the coals. The absurdity of the scene was very much the point: a human spit roast in the middle of a post-apocalyptic festival, played out in front of a crowd.

It was a performance that didn’t take itself too seriously, while still requiring the coordination, rope skills and trust that make this kind of live work possible. Sometimes kinbaku is about intimacy. Sometimes it is about beauty, struggle or surrender. And sometimes, it is simply about… dinner.
