ROPEMARKS RYŪ · LEVEL 0

Start with the foundations

Ryū #0 is the introduction to RopeMarks Ryū and the starting point for building a dependable foundation in kinbaku. No previous rope experience is required.

The focus is not on collecting patterns. It is on learning how rope works on a body: handling rope fluently, understanding structure and friction, shaping posture and sensation, communicating with the person you tie, and making deliberate choices from the beginning.

AT A GLANCE

Ryū #0 · Introduction

LEVEL

Starter

The entry point into the RopeMarks Ryū curriculum.

PREREQUISITE

None

You can start here without previous kinbaku or rope experience.

OUTCOME

Beginner

A foundation strong enough to continue into Ryū #1.

THE PROGRAM

What we work on

The exact exercises can change, but the purpose stays the same: build the technical and communicative foundations that later Ryū levels can rely on.

Technical foundations

  • Fluent, deliberate rope handling.
  • Basic ties for arms and legs, and ways to combine them across the body.
  • Using friction and structure to make the rope do what you intend.
  • Creating posture and sensation rather than simply reproducing a shape.
  • Making aesthetic choices while keeping safety part of the process.

Communication & play

  • Understanding how rope choices affect the person being tied.
  • Communicating about physical and mental effects during the tying process.
  • Exploring rope for pleasure, playfulness, intimacy or other intentions.
  • Learning how rigger and model shape a scene together.
  • Building awareness of what feels good, what does not, and how to communicate that clearly.

TWO PERSPECTIVES

Rigger and model both learn

For the rigger

The aim is to become comfortable enough with rope handling and basic structure that attention can begin to move away from remembering steps and toward the person in the rope, the desired effect and the choices being made.

For the model

The workshop offers experience with rope on different parts of the body and room to notice and communicate its physical and mental effects. That feedback is part of the tying, not an afterthought.

WHAT YOU TAKE FORWARD

A foundation you can build on

After Ryū #0, the goal is not to have memorised every possible tie. It is to have enough understanding and rope fluency to combine essential elements safely and playfully, and to continue learning at beginner level.
