Level 1 - The Basics and More

This level is available as a real life and online workshop.

In this workshop we start by telling you a little about the history of Japanese bondage and you get the chance to ask questions. Then we explain to you the different ways you can use your rope for bondage. The telling part is kept short so we can quickly continue with the hands-on part (this is a workshop:). This is where Bob explains and demonstrates a certain bondage and points out relevant safety issues. Then you get to practice the bondage on your own partner. Bob will be available for questions and advice and Chantal is available as a walking example. At the end of the workshop you will see a live demonstration.

Workshop contents
1. Short introduction into the history of shibari,
2. Rope usage,
3. Safety,
4. Single limb bondage (wrist and ankle),
5. Ryo-tekubi shibari,
A technique used to tie both wrists together. It does not matter where the wrists are, or if the tie is cinched, as long as the wrists are tied together. The same technique can be used to tie wrist to ankles, ankles to ankles or to other parts of the body and even to furniture.
6. Mune nawa,
  Breast bondage Japanese style.
7. Kotobu ryo-tekubi shibari,
After applying the ryo-tekubi shibari, you can start to continue to make this bondage into bondage-play. For instance, with this kotobu ryo-tekubi shibari, a wrists behind the neck tie. You can go fluidly from a ryo tekubi shibari, using the mune nawa, to create one form of a kotobu ryo-shibari.
8. Matanawa,
Generalized term for any pubic area tie or "crotch rope".
9. Ushiro takatekote shibari,
The basic box arm tie, the building block of most shibari ties. There are many variations of this from the simple to the complex.
10. Live demonstration.
Requirements and recommendations

The minimal set of rope you need to participate in this workshop is

  • 4 pieces of 7-9m in length (preferred is 6 pieces)

The type of rope you want to use is entirely up to you. We prefer a natural twisted rope, i.e. hemp or jute, with a 5 or 6mm thickness. If you do not have the rope let us know we might be able to arrange something

The thickness of the rope necessary to make a bondage depends on the size of your m-jo (the female captured in rope). Determine your thickness based on aesthetic reasons. i.e. don't use 10mm rope when your m-jo is 1.55m and weighs 45kilo. As a guideline; if you partner has a small or petite build use 4-5mm thick ropes, if you partner has a larger build use 6-8mm thick rope
